It’s easy to think of ourselves and others in such absolute terms – to say with certainty ‘I am an empath, so I feel things deeply’ or ‘They are an introvert and this is why they don’t like group activities.’
But I’ve recently learned the distinction between personality types and traits. The former collects facets of a person’s personality under one umbrella to give a ‘type’ (think Myers-Briggs-style) while the latter considers our qualities as dimensional.
Importantly, research tells us that our personality isn’t a fixed point on this scale but can change as we age, learn, grow. We move within the dimensions of our identity.
